Choose Your Trekking Sector

Bwindi has four trekking sectors — each with different gorilla families, terrain and lodge options. Tulambule helps you choose the best sector for your fitness level and budget.

🌿 Buhoma
The original and most popular sector. Best road access, widest lodge range from budget to luxury. 4 habituated gorilla families including the famous Mubare group — the first ever habituated group in Uganda.
🏔️ Ruhija
Highest altitude sector at 2,350m. More challenging terrain but rewarding — home to the Bitukura and Oruzogo families. Excellent birding. Fewer tourists than Buhoma.
🌄 Rushaga
Largest sector with the most habituated groups — 6 families including Nshongi, the largest group in Bwindi. Also the only sector offering the Gorilla Habituation Experience (full day, $1,500).
🦍 Nkuringo
Most remote and scenic sector on the southern edge of Bwindi. Dramatic views over the Congo. The Nkuringo gorilla family are known for venturing into nearby communities — magical encounters.
Common Questions

Gorilla Trekking FAQ

When is the best time to trek gorillas in Uganda?
Gorilla trekking is available year-round in Uganda. The best conditions are during the dry seasons — June to August and December to February — when trails are less muddy and trekking is easier. However, the rainy seasons (March–May and September–November) offer fewer tourists and lush green forest photography.
How fit do I need to be for gorilla trekking?
Moderate fitness is required. Treks can last 1–8 hours depending on where the gorillas are. The terrain is hilly and sometimes steep. Tulambule recommends comfortable hiking boots, long trousers and a walking stick (provided at the park). Most healthy adults of any age can complete a gorilla trek.
How far in advance should I book my gorilla permit?
We strongly recommend booking 3–6 months in advance, especially for peak season (June–August). Uganda has a limited number of permits per day — only 8 visitors per gorilla group. Tulambule secures your permit as part of your safari package.
Is gorilla trekking safe?
Yes. All gorilla groups are habituated to human presence over several years before trekking begins. Uganda Wildlife Authority rangers accompany every trek. The gorillas are wild but relaxed around visitors. Our guides are experienced, certified and know every family by name.
Can I combine gorilla trekking with other Uganda activities?
Absolutely — and we highly recommend it. Most Tulambule gorilla packages combine Bwindi with Queen Elizabeth National Park (game drives, tree-climbing lions, Kazinga Channel cruise), Kibale Forest (chimpanzee tracking) and Murchison Falls (Nile boat cruise).
